The Shift to Digital Boarding Passes
As of November 2025, Ryanair has fully transitioned to a 100% digital boarding pass system via its mobile app, eliminating paper passes entirely. This move is designed to reduce operational costs, enhance service efficiency, streamline rebooking procedures, and save an estimated 300 tonnes of paper annually. Passengers are now required to check in online and save their boarding passes to a smartphone or tablet before heading to the airport.
How to Avoid the £55 Charge
To dodge the hefty £55 or 55 euro airport check-in fee, travellers must complete online check-in within the specified timeframes. If you have purchased a seat, you can check in from 60 days before your flight's scheduled departure. For those opting for a complimentary assigned seat, the window opens 24 hours prior to departure. Crucially, online check-in closes two hours before the flight, regardless of seat selection.
After checking in, passengers must save a copy of their digital boarding pass. Ryanair has stated that it will remind booked passengers to check in online before their departure. For individuals without access to a smartphone or tablet, the airline will print a boarding pass at no extra cost, but only if online check-in has been completed before arriving at the airport.
