A sinkhole has forced flights to be canceled and caused significant delays at LaGuardia Airport, one of New York's busiest travel hubs. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, led to the immediate shutdown of one of the airport's two runways, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Runway Closure and Flight Disruptions
The Port Authority discovered the sinkhole near Runway 4/22 during a routine daily morning inspection at approximately 11 a.m. local time. As a result, the runway was closed, prompting widespread flight disruptions. By Wednesday night, flight tracking site FlightAware reported 252 canceled flights and 321 delayed flights into or out of the Queens-based airport.
Officials stated, "Emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible." Photos captured by a local CBS News helicopter showed crews using an excavator and dump truck to address the sinkhole, which appeared large enough to pose a risk to pedestrians and vehicles.
Weather Worsens Situation
The flight disruptions were compounded by adverse weather conditions in the New York City area. The Port Authority warned travelers to expect further delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms. "Travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today, and are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information," the authority said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed it was "slowing flights" into LaGuardia due to the sinkhole and weather. A ground stop due to thunderstorms went into effect at 6:20 p.m. and was scheduled to last until 8:30 p.m. Additionally, a ground delay averaging over two hours was in effect until just before 1 a.m. Thursday.
Ongoing Repairs and Updates
The Port Authority stated it is in "close communication with airlines and airport partners and will continue providing updates as conditions evolve." Runway 4/22 is expected to remain closed until 6 a.m. Thursday, according to ABC News, citing the FAA. Travelers are advised to monitor their airline's updates for the latest information on flight statuses.
