This Saturday marks a historic break from tradition as Sky Sports broadcasts every 3pm kick-off in the Football League, exploiting a loophole in the long-standing Saturday blackout rule. All 24 matches in League One and League Two will be available to watch live on the Sky Sports+ platform, providing fans with unprecedented access to the final day of the regular season.
Why the Blackout Is Lifted
The UEFA-sanctioned blackout typically prevents the broadcast of any football between 2:45pm and 5:15pm on Saturdays in the UK, to protect attendances at lower-league and non-league clubs. However, the rule only applies if 50% of matches in the top two divisions (Premier League and Championship) are scheduled for the 3pm slot. This Saturday, all Championship fixtures have been moved to 12:30pm, and only three Premier League games kick off at 3pm, meaning less than 15% of top-tier matches fall within the blocked window. As a result, the legal blackout cannot be enforced.
Sky Sports+ Full Slate Coverage
Under the current 2024-2029 broadcast deal, Sky Sports holds the rights to show every EFL match on the final day of the season. The Sky Sports+ platform enables dozens of concurrent live streams, allowing fans to watch any of the 24 simultaneous 3pm kick-offs via the red button or online. This technological infrastructure turns the final day into a fully accessible event, with all matches available domestically and globally.
Premier League Exception
Despite the blackout being technically lifted, Premier League 3pm games such as Brentford vs West Ham will not be shown on UK television. This is because the Premier League's domestic rights were sold in specific packages that explicitly exclude the Saturday 3pm window, regardless of the blackout status. Therefore, only EFL matches benefit from the loophole.
Protecting Lower League Attendances
Ordinarily, the blackout exists to protect ticket sales and attendances of smaller clubs. However, with many League One and League Two sides playing crucial matches on the final day—including Luton Town's push for a play-off spot under manager Jack Wilshere—the EFL has prioritised global and domestic accessibility. The move is expected to boost viewership without significantly impacting stadium attendance, as most fixtures are already sold out.
What to Watch
Key matches include Luton Town vs Bolton Wanderers, where Luton aim to secure a League One play-off berth, and Wrexham's decisive clash as they chase promotion. All 24 games kick off at 3pm BST on Saturday, 2 May 2026, exclusively on Sky Sports+.
