Wizz Air Gains Authorisation for US Charter Flights Ahead of World Cup 2026
Wizz Air UK has officially received the necessary permits to operate flights connecting the United Kingdom and the United States, the airline announced on Friday. This authorisation paves the way for tailored charter services, although the carrier has clarified it has no plans to launch regular commercial flights on this route.
Targeting Football Teams and Supporters for Major Tournament
The airline stated it anticipates strong interest from European football teams participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as well as from supporters and tour operators organising group travel to the US. Charter packages will be designed to offer flexible transatlantic travel options for large corporate groups, sports organisations, and tour operators following the World Cup travel period.
Yvonne Moynihan, managing director of Wizz Air UK, expressed enthusiasm about the milestone. "This is a proud and exciting day for everyone at our airline," she said. "Receiving approval to operate between the UK and the United States is a huge achievement. It opens the door to incredible opportunities, particularly for European football teams and supporters travelling across the Atlantic this summer. We are ready to deliver exceptional charter experiences and bring fans closer to the action in the United States."
Potential for Lower Transatlantic Air Fares
Fans of England and Scotland flying to the US for the men's football World Cup this summer may benefit from reduced transatlantic air fares. According to analysis by OAG, a global provider of digital flight information, fares from Europe to eight of the eleven host cities for travel in June and July 2026 have decreased compared to the same months last year.
Aviation data specialist John Grant commented on the trend, noting, "I suspect that transatlantic fares could fall further, although from the UK the upcoming APD [air passenger duty] increases do not help." This suggests that while overall fares might drop, UK-specific taxes could offset some savings for travellers departing from British airports.
The airline's move into US charter flights represents a strategic expansion, leveraging the high demand expected around the World Cup. With the tournament drawing teams and supporters from across Europe, Wizz Air aims to capitalise on this niche market, offering specialised services that cater to the unique needs of sports travel.
