Armed Police Deployed to Metrocentre Over Parking Dispute
Armed police at Metrocentre after firearm report

Armed police were deployed to one of the UK's largest shopping centres on Saturday afternoon following reports that a man was in possession of a firearm.

Parking Space Argument Sparks Armed Response

The incident unfolded at the Metrocentre in Gateshead on Saturday, December 27, a day when the complex was busy with shoppers taking advantage of the Boxing Day sales. According to Northumbria Police, they received a call shortly before 2.15pm concerning a disturbance in the shopping centre's Yellow multi-storey car park.

The force stated that the occupants of two vehicles had become embroiled in a "verbal dispute" over a parking space. During the altercation, it was reported that one of the men involved was thought to be carrying a suspected firearm, which prompted the immediate dispatch of armed officers as a precautionary measure.

Five Arrests Made, No Weapon Found

Officers swiftly attended the scene and five males were arrested a short time later on suspicion of possession of a firearm. The individuals arrested were aged 17, 18, 20, 21, and 23.

Despite an extensive search of the area, police confirmed that no weapons were located. All five of the arrested men have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Northumbria Police have emphasised that this is being treated as an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public.

Police Dismiss Terror Speculation

In the aftermath of the incident, rumours circulated online, particularly within far-right conspiracy groups, falsely suggesting the event was a failed terror attack. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police has explicitly confirmed to The Mirror that the incident "is not being treated as a terror related incident".

In an official statement, the force urged the public to avoid speculation. "We would ask people to refrain from speculation and sharing misinformation both in the community and online while our investigation is ongoing," the statement read. Patrols in the Metrocentre continue as normal.
