Soldier Charged with Murder of Comrade at Shropshire Barracks

A serving soldier has been charged with the murder of Corporal Geoffrey McNeill, a 32-year-old member of the 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment, whose body was found at Clive Barracks in Tern Hill, Shropshire, on Saturday morning. The accused, aged 23 and also based at the barracks, was arrested and is being questioned by detectives.

West Mercia Police launched a murder investigation after McNeill was discovered dead in a building at the barracks. Detective Inspector Steve Tonks confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been carried out, with further tests ongoing to establish the cause of death. Police are also investigating a fight that occurred in Market Drayton on Friday night and have appealed for CCTV footage from local businesses.

McNeill's brother, Jason, paid tribute on behalf of the family, describing him as a dedicated soldier who served his country with honour. 'Geoff was born in Ballymoney, Northern Ireland and dedicated his life to the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment,' he said. 'He was a much loved son, brother, uncle and friend.'
