Co-op's own-brand mayonnaise has beaten Heinz and Hellmann's in a blind taste test conducted by consumer group Which?. The Co-op On The Side Real Mayonnaise, priced at £1.35 for a 500ml bottle, took the top spot, with Sainsbury's own-label mayo coming second and Hellmann's third.
Co-op Mayo Wins Top Marks
Which? tested seven supermarket own-label mayonnaises alongside Heinz and Hellmann's. The Co-op product was described as "an appetising-looking, creamy mayo with a flavour that most of our tasters enjoyed." Two-thirds of testers found the consistency spot on, and the majority loved its tanginess. Despite being the most expensive supermarket offering, it remains less than half the cost of major brands.
The Full Rankings
In last place was M&S Classic Mayo at £1.40 for 500ml. Second-to-last was Heinz Seriously Good Mayonnaise, costing £2.84 for 540ml. Morrisons own-label mayo at 95p for 500ml was described as dark and "a bit bland" but creamy. Tesco mayo at 85p for 450ml had a pleasing thickness but was deemed overly tangy by some. Asda's own-label at 96p for 500ml had good colour and creaminess but lacked flavour. Lidl's Batts mayo at 95p for 500ml matched Hellmann's in testers' estimation, though some found it bland.
Hellmann's Beats Heinz
Hellmann's, at £2.45 for 430ml, was polarising: some adored its taste, others found it too mild. Still, it outperformed Heinz, which came second-to-last. Sainsbury's own-label mayo at £1 for 500ml impressed more than two-thirds of testers with its consistency, and over half liked its strength and flavour.
Which? noted that Aldi's own-brand mayo was not tested as the supermarket said its range was undergoing changes, and Waitrose was unavailable at the time of testing.
