Hampshire Constabulary's chief constable, Alexis Boon, has issued a stark warning that individuals who threaten police officers and their families could face prosecution. The warning comes amid an 'incredible' surge in abuse directed at the force, both online and during recent disorder in Southampton following the sentencing for the murder of Henry Nowak.
Abuse and Disorder
Mr Boon revealed that his officers are dealing with an unprecedented level of hostility. He stated that 'threats and violence' are being exploited to advance certain agendas, capitalising on the 'appalling tragedy' of Mr Nowak's death. The chief constable praised the 'brave' handling of disorder in the Portswood area, which resulted in two arrests, with further arrests anticipated as investigations proceed.
Two-Tier Policing Denied
Mr Boon dismissed allegations of 'two-tier policing' and acknowledged the ongoing Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation into the incident involving Mr Nowak. He expressed understanding for the family's distress during this difficult time.
The chief constable's remarks underscore the police's commitment to maintaining public order while ensuring accountability. The IOPC probe continues to examine the circumstances surrounding Mr Nowak's death, with the community urged to remain calm and allow the legal process to unfold.
