Snapchat Burglar Sentenced to Nine Years for Filmed Crime Spree
A brazen thief who documented his criminal activities on social media, leading to his own downfall, has been handed a substantial prison sentence. Liam Moore, aged 20, engaged in a three-month crime spree across Birmingham and Solihull, stealing over £300,000 worth of vehicles and goods from homes and cars.
Social Media Evidence Proves Crucial
Moore's arrogance proved to be his undoing as he posted videos to Snapchat showcasing his illicit actions. These clips, which included footage of him melting a door lock and boasting about stolen cars, became pivotal evidence for law enforcement. Following his arrest, police seized and analysed his mobile phone, uncovering records that linked him directly to 13 burglaries and 14 car thefts.
Detectives discovered that Moore's search history revealed he researched the specific cars he targeted, demonstrating a calculated approach to his crimes. His online behaviour, where he referred to stealing as "grafting," added insult to injury for the hard-working victims he preyed upon.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Initially pleading not guilty, Moore changed his plea to guilty on the second day of his trial at Birmingham Crown Court. This reversal came after the overwhelming evidence, largely sourced from his own social media posts, was presented. The court sentenced him to nine years imprisonment, marking a significant conclusion to the investigation.
DS Charlie Edwards of West Midlands Police commented on the case, stating, "I'm so glad Moore has finally been served the justice he deserves for what he has done. He was that confident he wouldn't get caught, filming himself breaking into homes and taking photos of stolen cars. We worked hard to ensure he was held accountable, and I'm glad he will now spend the next few years in prison."
This case highlights the increasing role of digital evidence in modern policing and serves as a stark warning to criminals who might foolishly document their illegal activities online.
