A 15-year-old boy and a woman have been killed in a shooting following a disagreement during an informal football match in the United States. The incident occurred in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Tuesday, May 5, near Southwest Elementary School.
Details of the incident
According to police, a group of juveniles were playing football—known as soccer in the US—when an 18-year-old individual asked to join the game. He was reportedly turned away, which led to a verbal altercation. The suspect then pulled out a firearm and shot the 15-year-old boy. A woman who came to the aid of the victim was also targeted and fatally shot.
Interim police chief Joe Trigg described the scene as horrific, noting that at least seven or eight children witnessed the shooting. “For whatever reason, he was turned away,” Trigg said. “Did not like the fact that he was turned away so a verbal altercation started, which led to the suspect pulling out a firearm and shooting that juvenile. The adult female had came to the aid, verbally, of the juvenile victim so then she was targeted.”
Arrest and community response
The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by police. The Grand Rapids school district closed two schools on Wednesday, May 6, to allow the community to process the tragedy. Local resident Donny Irving expressed the collective grief, saying, “Everyone knows a youth and people who go to playgrounds who play, school students, and I think the whole community feels the loss that’s there.”
