A 23-year-old man who was stabbed to death in a quiet Surrey village has been named as Alfonso Sibley, as a teenager appears in court charged with his murder.
Brave Final Moments After Alleyway Attack
Alfonso Sibley, known to friends and family as Alfie, died after being fatally wounded in an alleyway near the Wheatsheaf pub on Kingston Road in Ewell. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, December 9.
Investigators believe the young man was first attacked outside the nearby Spring Tavern pub. Despite his injuries, he managed to travel several hundred yards along the road to The Wheatsheaf. Staff at the pub desperately attempted to save his life, performing CPR as he collapsed. One witness described a "bloodbath" as they tried to stem the bleeding.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3.30pm but, tragically, Alfonso was pronounced dead at the location.
Police Investigation and Court Appearances
Surrey Police launched a major investigation into the killing. A 15-year-old boy has since been charged with murder. He appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody. He is next due to appear at Guildford Crown Court on Monday, December 22.
In addition to this charge, police arrested a second 15-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy, and a 20-year-old man on suspicion of murder. All three have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Community Shock in 'Quiet and Peaceful' Village
The violent death has sent shockwaves through the local community, which residents describe as typically "quaint and peaceful". Horrified locals reported that the attackers arrived and fled the scene on motorbikes.
One resident stated: "We have been told at least two attackers stabbed him to death after arriving and leaving on motorbikes. It's horrific." They praised the victim's bravery and the efforts of pub staff who tried to save him.
Another woman in her 60s said she saw figures running from the area moments after the stabbing. Patrick Ward, 56, expressed concern, noting that residents had recently seen unknown men wearing balaclavas and riding motorbikes in the vicinity. "Something has gone seriously wrong in the last few weeks," he said.
Ongoing Appeal for Information
Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Kimball Edey of the Surrey and Sussex Police Major Crime Team, offered his condolences. "My thoughts remain with the loved ones of the young man who has lost his life," he said.
DCI Edey confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but stated that, at this stage, police do not believe they are looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. He thanked the local community for their patience and acknowledged the efforts of the Wheatsheaf staff.
The police continue to appeal for witnesses and any relevant footage. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was driving on London Road, Ewell, past the Spring Tavern between 3pm and 4pm, or along Kingston Road past The Wheatsheaf or Queen Adelaide pub towards the Ruxley Lane junction between 3.30pm and 5pm on December 9.
Officers are also asking for anyone with CCTV, dashcam, helmet cam, or mobile phone footage that may have captured any part of the incident to come forward. "Every piece of information, no matter how small, could be vital," DCI Edey urged.
