A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered, with her body discovered dumped in a pond in Surjapur Haat, Baruipur, near Kolkata, India, on Sunday morning. The incident has triggered huge protests and violence in the area.
Details of the Incident
The girl had reportedly gone to buy food from a shop near her home on Saturday evening (July 4) and did not return. Her body was found in a pond the next morning, leading to allegations of rape and murder.
According to The Times of India, crowds gathered and violence erupted, with a 26-year-old suspect reportedly attacked and killed. There were clashes between police and the crowd, and vehicles were damaged.
Police Response and Arrests
Police are questioning five people in connection with the incident. “So far, we have arrested two people. One person was arrested last night and another this morning. Along with them, we have detained three others. Our officers are questioning them,” said a police officer, as reported by Telegraph India.
Protests and Security Measures
Hours after the body was found, protesters blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burnt tyres, and damaged police vehicles, demanding action from authorities. Prohibitory orders have been imposed to prevent gatherings.
“The situation is under control, but prohibitory orders have been imposed as a preventive measure to ensure that law and order is maintained. Adequate police deployment has been made in the affected areas,” said a police officer.
“We appeal to members of the public not to pay heed to rumours and to cooperate with the administration. Strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb peace.”
