A bin man has highlighted a common mistake many households make when numbering their wheelie bins, which often leads to bins being returned to the wrong property. The self-proclaimed 'binfluencer', Ashley, known as the 'No 1 bin man' on TikTok, shared the blunder and offered a straightforward solution.
The Common Mistake
In a video, Ashley responded to a viewer who complained that bin men never return bins to the correct house, jokingly suggesting adding a postcode. Ashley advised people to display their house number on both their property and their bins to make matching easier. He emphasised that on food bins, numbers should be placed on both the lid and the side, as these bins often fall over.
The Simple Solution
For standard wheelie bins, Ashley urged: "Put it on the lid. Don't put it on the side, put it on the lid so no matter where you're standing, you can always see the number." He showed a bin with a sticker displaying the house number, adding: "And then they go back outside your house, problem solved. House number, bin number, win win."
However, some viewers argued it was unnecessary to add numbers at all. One suggested writing the number with a white marker pen. In response, Ashley posted a follow-up video, saying: "Or, you could do it correctly and write it, or you could just get a sticker with your house number and your road name. And then you ain't gotta make the same mistakes as this dude, and then you can have the correct bin outside your correct house."
Many viewers sided with Ashley, preferring stickers over painted numbers. One commented: "It looks tacky when people paint the number on the bin." Others noted that not all properties have numbers, with one saying: "All houses don't have numbers," and another adding: "Some actually don't have numbers they have names lol."
To ensure your bin finds its way back to your property, mark it on the lid with your house number. This simple step can save hassle for you, your binmen, and your neighbours.
