Police in West Bengal, India, have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, whose body was found in a pond after she went missing while running an errand to a local shop.
Incident Details
The girl left her home on Saturday evening (July 4) to buy food from a nearby shop in Baruipur, a city in West Bengal. When she failed to return, her parents reported her missing to the police. A search operation was launched, and her body was discovered the following morning, concealed in a sack, in a pond.
According to reports from The Star, the girl's parents told police that four individuals had abducted and gang raped her before killing her. The crime has sparked widespread outrage and violent protests among local residents.
Protests and Violence
Protests erupted across the area, with demonstrators blocking roads and railway lines, vandalizing property, and throwing stones at police personnel, as reported by the Express. Local media also reported that a young man was fatally assaulted by protesters, who alleged he was associated with the suspects and involved in the murder.
Police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects and have deployed a substantial force to restore order. Inspector General of Police Kankar Prasad Barui stated: "The situation is under control. A large police picket has been deployed and no one involved in this heinous crime will be spared. We will ensure that all the accused are arrested and the strongest possible punishment is sought."
Investigation and Aftermath
The girl's body has been taken to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police presence has been increased across the region due to the potential for further protests. Authorities are continuing their investigation to apprehend the remaining suspects.
