East Kilbride Youth Disability Sports Club (EKYDSC) celebrated a double success at South Lanarkshire Disability Sport’s (SLDS) annual awards ceremony, where sports co-ordinator Bill Mckechnie and club member Emily O’Connell both received prestigious honours.
Bill Mckechnie Receives Millar Stoddart Award
Bill Mckechnie was presented with the SLDS Millar Stoddart Award for Service to Sport, recognising his outstanding contribution to the development of EKYDSC over more than 25 years. He was one of the founding members of the volunteer-run club in 1999 and, in addition to his membership of the organising committee, he also serves as the club’s sports co-ordinator. In this role, he arranges for professionally-qualified coaches to provide members the opportunity to try out more than 30 different sports and leisure activities each year.
Emily O’Connell Named Female Sportsperson of the Year
Emily O’Connell was recognised as Female Sportsperson of the Year. Competing in badminton, Emily had a strong 2025, claiming gold in mixed doubles at the West Disability Badminton Competition and silver medals at three further badminton championships. She has also progressed to her yellow belt at Hamilton Judo Club, after being introduced to the sport by a taster session at EKYDSC.
Volunteer-Run Club Provides Opportunities
EKYDSC is entirely volunteer-run, providing opportunities to participate in sport and recreational activities for young people aged 16 and over with additional support needs, including learning disabilities. Club volunteers work with disadvantaged young people in East Kilbride and surrounding communities, their families and carers, offering a multi-sports model delivered by specialist, qualified coaches to widen grassroots participation in sport by the disabled. EKYDSC delivers two sessions per week, 48 weeks per year, including various outdoor activity days.
Club Chair Praises Award Winners
EKYDSC chair Heather Irvine said: “Everyone at the club is thrilled by the success of Bill and Emily in winning these awards. We think the two awards exemplify what EKYDSC is all about. To run the club we rely on the commitment of a great team of volunteers and Bill’s dedication is totally inspiring. And, through the fantastic progress she has made, Emily is a wonderful example of how our members can grow and develop, through their participation in sport.”
