Councillors have formally agreed to the appointment of a new teacher representative to North Lanarkshire’s education committee. The full council unanimously agreed that Stuart Winning be appointed to represent the Secondary and Additional Support Needs sector on the Education, Children and Families committee, beginning in September.
Appointment Process and Vote
Mr Winning was selected via a formal ballot process conducted among eligible staff within his sector, and he received 83 per cent of the vote. Last month, the education committee noted this outcome and agreed to recommend Mr Winning be appointed at the next full council meeting, which it did without debate.
Role and Value of Teacher Representatives
Councils have no legal obligation to appoint teacher representatives but this is the norm in North Lanarkshire as their contributions are valued by elected members in their decision making processes. A report on the decision noted “the appointment of a teacher representative supports the continued inclusion of professional educational experience and operational insight within the work of the Education, Children and Families Committee.”
