Broadway legend Patti LuPone, 77, has expressed fury after a cruise ship she is scheduled to perform on was banned from docking in Turkey because it carries, in her words, 'a magnificent ship full of gay men. And me.' The Atlantis Events cruise was denied entry to ports in Istanbul and Kuşadası by Turkish authorities, citing the country's 'moral standards' and 'family values.'
LuPone Speaks Out on Instagram
LuPone shared the news on Instagram, writing: 'I am shocked. The Atlantis cruise I am performing on next week has been banned from entering Turkey. A ship — a magnificent ship full of gay men. And me. Denied entry to Turkey simply because of who is on board.' She added dramatically: 'I am furious, but I am sailing.' The actor promised she will still perform for passengers as the cruise heads elsewhere. 'I am ready to perform for all the wonderful men on this Atlantis cruise, who deserve so much better than this.'
Atlantis Events CEO Reacts
Rich Campbell, president and CEO of Atlantis Events, said it was the first time in the company's history that a country had explicitly refused entry because of who was onboard. 'It's pretty stunning, to be honest,' he told CNN. 'I mean, the reasoning behind it is that it's a gay group.' He stressed that Atlantis is not a political organisation. 'We are not there for anything except to spend money, have a good time, take tours and be incredibly respectful to every culture we visit.'
Alternative Ports and Impact
Instead of Turkey, the cruise will now visit Cairo and Crete. Campbell noted that the decision feels surreal, comparing it to a plotline from The White Lotus. Despite the setback, LuPone's determination to perform ensures passengers will still enjoy a private Broadway-style show.
