Clare Balding Reacts to Wimbledon Stars' Heated Exchange After Epic Match
Clare Balding on Wimbledon Stars' Heated Exchange

BBC presenter Clare Balding offered her immediate take on the heated post-match exchange between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina following their marathon Wimbledon clash, even drawing a comparison to football.

The pair engaged in a lengthy discussion after the Canadian's 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 victory on Court 1, with tensions spilling over as they walked off the court.

Balding's Analysis of the Incident

Balding suggested the row may have stemmed from Davidovich Fokina's apparent injury during the fourth set. The Spaniard had earned two break points to stay in the match when he seemed to roll his ankle. After receiving treatment, he returned to his feet, wincing, but then broke Auger-Aliassime's serve to level at 5-5 before taking the tie-break.

“There was something of an angry exchange after the match,” Balding said on the BBC's coverage. “I believe this is because [Davidovich Fokina] turned an ankle, had a bit of attention to that and then seemed to be moving fine and running fine, which can happen.”

She added: “If you've been watching the football at the World Cup you'll see all sorts of recoveries are made from perceived injuries. After that as Davidovich Fokina was leaving the court he went back for a little afters.”

Auger-Aliassime's Post-Match Comments

Auger-Aliassime, the No. 3 seed who had not dropped serve all tournament prior to that moment, chose not to directly address the exchange in his on-court interview. However, he reflected on the gruelling encounter, which lasted over four hours.

“I've played a few rollercoaster matches in the course of my career but this is at the top of the charts. It was a crazy match!” he said. “Great level, high intensity, high focus. He's been on a winning streak on grass and the level kept being high. I'm thrilled I was able to get through because it was a really hard fought match.”

He added: “More than four hours and that's a lot of work, a lot of milage in the legs but I feel good and feel ready for what comes next.”

Next Challenge: Novak Djokovic

The Canadian's next opponent is former champion Novak Djokovic, who defeated Roman Safiullin earlier on Sunday. Auger-Aliassime injected some humour when asked about the quarter-final clash.

“I heard it's a Serbian player, not so bad. That's all I saw,” he said with a smile. “I don't know much of him but I'll try to watch some videos and get ready!”
