Beloved Doc Martin Actress June Marlow Passes Away at 95

The entertainment world mourns the loss of June Marlow, the cherished actress best known for her role in the popular television series Doc Martin. She passed away at the age of 95, just weeks after celebrating her birthday on January 15. Her death occurred on February 22 at her home overlooking Sutton Harbour in Plymouth, surrounded by her loving family.

A Peaceful Passing and Family Tributes

Jean Dike, who performed under the stage name June Marlow, spent her final weeks in the apartment she had called home for 35 years. She was supported by carers from St Luke's Hospice Plymouth and her daughter, Kate Van Dike, who moved in to provide full-time care. According to Kate, her mother maintained a positive outlook, refusing to dwell on health concerns. 'Mum didn't want to focus on that,' Kate shared. 'She kept looking forward and was always pragmatic and driven.'

The family announced her passing last month through a heartfelt post on the Facebook page of The Van Dike Club, which belonged to her late husband. The tribute described Jean as 'an ever loving and inspirational Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Mother in Law, a woman of unwavering strength, grace and dignity to the end.' It highlighted her legacy as one of the most successful British female singers of the jazz era, with her beautiful voice forever cherished.

A Distinguished Career and Final On-Screen Appearance

June Marlow's acting career flourished later in life, with her most notable role being in Doc Martin. Her final television appearance was on the show at the age of 87, where she played Ethel, an elderly woman who had fallen and got a rusty nail lodged in her hand. Reportedly aware it might be her last performance, she told her co-star Martin Clunes, 'If this is my swansong, then I'm more than happy it's with you, Martin.'

Her journey into the arts began early. Teachers at Castle Street Infants School in the 1930s quickly recognized her talents. By age 13, she made her first professional recording with the BBC Concert Orchestra, traveling alone by train from Plymouth to London and back, earning 15 guineas for the gig. At 16, she appeared on the ITV talent competition Opportunity Knocks, hosted by Hughie Green.

Personal Life and Legacy

Jean's personal life was equally rich. She met her husband, Peter Van Dike, a musician and photographer who played double bass with a comedy band she toured with. They married quickly while on tour and enjoyed a 40-year marriage until his death in 1988. After having children, Jean ventured into acting, adopting the stage name June Marlow. She starred in productions like MI High with June Whitfield and multiple series of Doc Martin.

Later in life, Peter opened The Van Dike Club in Exmouth Road, which became an early venue for legendary artists such as Pink Floyd, Status Quo, and Eric Clapton. Jean's daughter Kate praised the care her mother received from St Luke's Hospice, noting, 'St Luke's ensured that this very discerning, successful person was able to do things her own way, and they were here to support me and the family too.' She emphasized that without their help, caring for her mother at home would have been impossible.

June Marlow's legacy endures through her contributions to television, music, and her family's memories. Her story is one of resilience, talent, and grace, leaving an indelible mark on British entertainment.
