Former child star Macaulay Culkin has publicly conceded to living a life he once vowed would never be his – that of a suburban father complete with the controversial foam footwear, Crocs.
From Critic to Convert: The Crocs Transformation
The Home Alone icon, now 45, revealed in an interview with WWD's FN that his perspective on the polarising clogs performed a complete reversal after he became a father to two sons with his fiancée, actress Brenda Song. "I wasn't ever really a Crocs guy," Culkin confessed. "But when I started having kids, I found out that they are kind of really convenient and cozy."
He humorously acknowledged the personal cliché he has now fully embraced. "You know, I kind of swore to myself that I was never going to be the suburban dad who wore Crocs, but then I became a suburban dad who wears Crocs," he said. "So here we are." The turning point, he explained, came after seeing his eldest child in a bright pink pair, which inspired him to get a matching set. This sartorial choice soon led to paparazzi snapping him in the pink Crocs while on the school run.
Domestic Life: Skincare Routines and Quick Prep
While his stance on footwear has softened, Culkin remains a work in progress in other areas of home life, particularly skincare. He previously told People magazine in 2024 that it was Song, 37, who introduced him to basic grooming habits. "Whenever Brenda started schmearing stuff on my face," was how he described the beginning of his skincare journey.
Song, however, jokes that her efforts have had limited success. "He has no skincare routine," she admitted. The former Disney Channel star, famous for The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, said she considers herself lucky if Culkin even splashes water on his face before bed. Their differing approaches are most evident when preparing for events. "It took me an hour and a half to get ready, and he came up at the last minute and in five minutes, he was done," she laughed.
A Look at Their Careers and Relationship
Both Culkin and Song began their careers exceptionally young. Culkin's breakout role came at age 10 in the 1990 blockbuster Home Alone, which grossed $476.7 million globally. He reprised the role in 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which earned $359 million worldwide.
Song started modelling at six and acting at seven. She rose to prominence on Disney, starring in Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior. The couple first met on the set of the film Changeland in 2013 but didn't initially connect. Rumours of their romance began after they were spotted on a double date at Knott's Berry Farm in California.
The pair welcomed their first child, Dakota Song Culkin, on April 5, 2021. Culkin proposed in January 2022, and their second son, Carson, was born in December of the same year. Culkin was previously married to actress Rachel Miner from 1998 to 2002.
Ultimately, Macaulay Culkin's journey from a globally recognised child actor to a self-proclaimed suburban dad in Crocs highlights a relatable narrative of parenting priorities reshaping personal style and habits, proving that even the most steadfast vows can be undone by the convenience of foam clogs and the influence of children.
