Mary Berry Opens Up About Husband's Frail Health and Drunk Proposal

Dame Mary Berry, the beloved TV chef, has revealed that her husband Paul Hunnings is 'terribly frail' as she prepares to receive the BAFTA Fellowship for her exceptional contribution to television. The 90-year-old, known for her role on The Great British Bake Off, has been married to Paul for nearly 60 years.

In a recent interview with Yours Magazine, Mary shared that her husband is 'very cherished and well looked after' despite his frail health. She described leaving him a plate of smoked salmon with lemon and crustless bread before heading out. 'He doesn't have a drink with it, I'll do the drinking when I get in,' she added.

Mary also recalled Paul's drunken proposal in 1966. During an episode of her BBC show Mary Berry Everyday, she said: 'I do remember the first proposal and I think you were drunk.' Paul responded: 'Well I might have been. It's a big step. You don't go into something like that without a bit of fortification.'

The couple married after Paul's third proposal, where he told Mary: 'I'm getting on in age, so either it's yes or no.' Mary wore a wedding dress that cost just five pounds and made her own cake. They have three children: Thomas, Annabel, and William, who tragically died in a car accident in 1989 at age 19.

Mary credits her good health to careful portion sizes, noting that her husband is 'always in the biscuit tin' despite her lack of control over his snacking. She remains active and continues to work, with her daughter Annabel following in her footsteps as a chef.
