Prince William may have attempted to settle the long-standing debate over whether cream or jam should be spread on a scone first, but now Meghan Markle has waded into the discussion, revealing her own preference.
William's Revelation
During an appearance on Heart Breakfast on Friday, Prince William was presented with a plate of scones, clotted cream, and jam. When asked which way was best, he replied: "I love that I'm the authority on scones. I can only tell you what I learned from my grandmother. And she would definitely, she had the cream on first. Cream on first, jam on top."
The age-old debate has divided opinion, with the Devon method advocating for cream first followed by jam, while the Cornish method insists on jam first and then cream.
Meghan's Position
Now, the Duchess of Sussex has reignited the controversy. On her lifestyle brand As Ever's Instagram account, she shared a video of freshly baked scones with cream spread first, followed by a spoonful of her own raspberry jam on top. The caption read: "Memorial weekend plans. Baking warm scones topped with our Strawberry or Raspberry Spread, Orange Blossom Honey, and Flower Sprinkles."
Meghan's preference aligns with that of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William, suggesting a royal consensus on the matter.
Kate's Different Take
However, the Princess of Wales may have a different view. In 2023, during a tea party celebrating 75 years of the NHS, Kate told TV presenter Mel Giedroyc: "I always do jam and then cream." At the time, William joked: "I do whichever is closest to me."
The Queen's Scones
In 2020, the Queen's former chef Darren McGrady revealed details about the scones baked at Buckingham Palace. He said: "The Queen would have plain scones one day, and fruit scones the next, with raisins and sultanas. She would always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world."
Whether cream or jam comes first, the scone debate continues to captivate royal watchers and tea enthusiasts alike.
