Hollywood is reeling from a horrific tragedy after legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found brutally murdered in their Los Angeles home. Their youngest son, Nick Reiner, is now in police custody in connection with the killings.
A Grisly Discovery in Brentwood
The bodies of Rob, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68, were discovered at their $13.5 million mansion in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles on Sunday. Emergency services were called to the property on the 200 block of S. Chadbourne Avenue at approximately 3:30pm local time. Upon arrival, the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed both victims were already deceased.
Police have stated that both individuals suffered fatal lacerations consistent with a knife attack. There were no immediate signs of forced entry at the property, adding to the mystery of the shocking event.
Son Arrested and Held on Multi-Million Dollar Bail
Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at 5:46am PST on Monday. He had initially been arrested on Sunday evening at 21:15 local time. Court records reveal he is being held on an enormous bail amount of $4 million in connection with the murders of his parents.
The arrest report cited "Gang Activity" as part of the agency description, though full details surrounding this aspect remain unclear. Nick, who has spoken publicly in the past about severe struggles with addiction and homelessness, is said to reside in the Los Angeles area but is rarely seen in public.
Family in Shock and Police Investigation Continues
The couple's daughter, Romy Reiner, is reported to have been the one who found her parents' bodies. She reportedly informed law enforcement that a relative should be considered a suspect, describing them as "dangerous."
Rob Reiner's eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, who was adopted during his marriage to Penny Marshall, expressed profound shock. "I came from the greatest family ever. I don't know what to say. I'm in shock," she told NBC, adding she had seen her father just the day before for a family gathering.
A senior police officer confirmed that detectives intend to speak with all relevant family members and associates as part of the routine procedure for a case of this nature. Investigators are set to conduct a detailed forensic examination of the sprawling six-bedroom property. Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton confirmed the force would continue interviewing several family members.
In a statement, the Reiner family spokesperson said: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time." The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide Division is leading the ongoing investigation.
