The new Red Dwarf prequel novel, Red Dwarf Titan, co-written by Andrew Marshall and the late Rob Grant, is set for release on July 16. As a devoted fan, I was thrilled to receive an early review copy, but reading it was bittersweet knowing it marks Grant's final work for the franchise. Grant, who co-created the iconic British sci-fi comedy with Doug Naylor, died suddenly in February at age 70.
What Is Red Dwarf Titan About?
The 416-page prequel is set in an alternate universe before the events of series one. It follows lowly technicians Dave Lister and Arnold Rimmer as they head for shore leave on Saturn's moon Titan, encountering various madcap obstacles. Because it's a prequel, characters like the Cat and Kryten—who don't exist until after the accident that strands the crew three million years in the future—are absent. However, the writers find a creative, if somewhat convoluted, way to include them, much to my delight.
Hilarious Callbacks and Fan Service
The book is packed with humour and callbacks to the show, including a memorable scene involving the Cat in the sewers that echoes series two's Tongue Tied segment. I warn readers: avoid reading it on public transport, as I did, because you'll get strange looks from giggling uncontrollably. While it serves as a decent introduction for newcomers, long-time fans will appreciate the nods to earlier episodes.
A Bittersweet Finale for Rob Grant
My excitement is also tinged with sadness. Red Dwarf Titan is the last novel Rob Grant will ever contribute to the franchise. Although co-creator Doug Naylor could potentially write more episodes—the duo parted ways creatively in 1993—fans have lost something irreplaceable. I'm eagerly awaiting the audiobook, narrated by Rimmer actor Chris Barrie, who also read previous Red Dwarf novels. After Barrie's health scare last year, it's great to hear he's back.
