Brenda Blethyn Departed After 14 Series
Brenda Blethyn, who played the title character, left the role after the 14th and final series in 2025. The 80-year-old actress chose to step away to spend more time with her family. In a statement at the time, she said: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I'm sad to be saying cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last 14 years."
Final Episode Saw Vera Retire
The final episode, broadcast on ITV1 in January 2025, saw DCI Stanhope decline a promotion and retire to the Northumbrian coast with her dog. The series, adapted from Ann Cleeves' novels, ran for 14 years from 2011 to 2025.
Tonight's Episode: 'Tender'
In tonight's repeat, Vera investigates the death of a gravely ill young girl whose body is found in a remote railway siding. The synopsis states: "The case soon turns up twists and turns that makes Vera question who this girl actually was, and ask if her weakened state allowed someone to take advantage of her." The episode runs from 8.35pm to 10.30pm on ITV1 and is also available on ITVX.
