An astute reader has noticed a curious absence in royal photography: images of Queen Elizabeth II during pregnancy. Unlike modern royals like Princess Catherine and Princess Diana, the late Queen was rarely photographed while expecting. Why?
Royal Protocol and Privacy
According to royal expert Richard Kay, then-Princess Elizabeth did not announce her first two pregnancies for as long as possible and ensured no photographs were taken. This was partly due to a different era of royal protocol, where pregnancy was considered a private matter, and the monarchy sought to maintain an air of mystery and dignity.
Changing Traditions
By the time of her later children, attitudes had begun to shift. However, it was Princess Diana who truly transformed royal pregnancy photography, glowing with happiness as she approached motherhood. Princess Catherine continued this trend, exuding vitality despite difficult pregnancies.
