Willy Wonka cast 55 years on: tragic deaths to new careers

It has been more than 50 years since Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory first delighted audiences, yet the magical musical remains one of the most beloved family films ever made.

The film's legacy and Gene Wilder

Released in 1971 and based on Roald Dahl's classic novel, the film followed Charlie Bucket's unforgettable trip around Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory after discovering one of five coveted Golden Tickets. The movie helped cement Gene Wilder as a Hollywood legend, introduced a cast of unforgettable child stars and has gone on to achieve cult status despite Roald Dahl famously disowning the adaptation.

No one could have played the eccentric chocolatier quite like Gene Wilder. Already an established actor before landing the role, it was Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory that turned him into a household name. His performance of Pure Imagination remains one of cinema's most recognisable musical moments and has been covered countless times over the years. After Wonka, Wilder went on to star in classics including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Silver Streak. He also received an Oscar nomination for co-writing Young Frankenstein. Following the death of his wife, comedian Gilda Radner, in 1989, Wilder became a passionate advocate for cancer awareness before retiring from acting in 2005 to focus on writing. The Hollywood legend died in 2016 at the age of 83 following complications linked to Alzheimer's disease.

Peter Ostrum – Charlie Bucket

While Charlie Bucket became one of cinema's most famous children, Peter Ostrum decided Hollywood wasn't for him. Just 12-years-old when filming began, Ostrum formed a close friendship with Gene Wilder during production and was even offered a three-film contract after the movie's release. He turned it down. Instead, inspired by a love of horses, Ostrum studied at Cornell University and qualified as a veterinarian. He has since spent decades caring for animals rather than chasing movie roles. Although he rarely spoke about the film for many years, Ostrum now happily attends cast reunions and has described making Willy Wonka as a wonderful experience.

Julie Dawn Cole – Veruca Salt

Veruca Salt may have demanded everything "now", but Julie Dawn Cole enjoyed a long television career after playing the spoilt schoolgirl. Only 12 when she landed the role, Cole even celebrated her 13th birthday while filming the famous I Want It Now musical number. She later appeared in British TV favourites including Poldark and And Mother Makes Three before stepping away from acting in 2013. Nowadays she's a qualified psychotherapist, has written a memoir called I Want It Now and regularly appears at fan events celebrating the classic film.

Denise Nickerson – Violet Beauregarde

Unlike many of the young cast members, Denise Nickerson already had an acting career before turning into cinema's most famous blueberry. She had appeared in the gothic soap Dark Shadows before starring as chewing gum fanatic Violet Beauregarde and later landed roles in The Electric Company, The Brady Bunch and The Wonderful World of Disney. Nickerson retired from acting at just 21 and went on to work as a doctor's receptionist and office manager. She remained a favourite at fan conventions before sadly dying in 2019 at the age of 62 after suffering a major stroke.

Paris Themmen – Mike Teevee

Mike Teevee was obsessed with television, but Paris Themmen ended up living a life packed with real adventures. The youngest of the five child stars was known for being a mischievous prankster on set before continuing to act, including a guest appearance in Star Trek: Voyager. Away from acting, Themmen developed a passion for travel, backpacking through dozens of countries before eventually co-founding a travel business and working in real estate. In 2018, he even appeared as a contestant on Jeopardy!

Michael Böllner – Augustus Gloop

Greedy Augustus Gloop famously found himself sucked into Wonka's chocolate river pipes, but Michael Böllner's real life took a very different direction. The German child actor later admitted filming was difficult because he spoke very little English, making it hard to bond with many of his fellow cast members. Although he wanted to continue acting, his father insisted he return to school instead. Today, Böllner runs his own successful tax accounting firm in Munich and regularly attends Willy Wonka reunions to meet fans.

Rusty Goffe – Oompa Loompa

The Oompa Loompas became some of the film's most memorable characters, and Rusty Goffe was one of the most recognisable faces among the group. His career continued to flourish after Willy Wonka, appearing in blockbusters including Star Wars: A New Hope and several Harry Potter films. More than five decades later, Goffe still fondly looks back on his time inside Wonka's chocolate factory and regularly joins fellow cast members at anniversary celebrations and fan conventions.

For many fans, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory remains as magical today as it was back in 1971. While some of its stars went on to enjoy long Hollywood careers and others swapped the spotlight for ordinary jobs, they'll forever be remembered for helping create one of cinema's sweetest classics.
