The BBC has announced the return of the iconic snooker game show Big Break after a 24-year hiatus. Originally airing from 1991 to 2002, the programme attracted nearly 14 million viewers at its peak, hosted by comedian Jim Davidson and the late John Virgo, who passed away earlier this year.
New Hosts and Format
The revival will feature Paddy McGuinness, known for hosting Question of Sport until its cancellation in 2023, taking on the role previously held by Davidson. He will be joined by seven-time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry, who will serve as the snooker expert, filling Virgo's shoes. Hendry appeared in the very first episode of the original series in 1991 and participated 18 times across its run.
Reimagined for Modern Audiences
The BBC has stated that the show will be "reimagined" for today's viewers with a brand-new look and feel, combining fast-paced snooker frames with a relaxed, comedic atmosphere. New camera angles will allow audiences to see shots from different perspectives, and the memorable theme tune will be brought back. The format will see three contestants and their professional snooker partners compete in three rounds of trick shots to reach a dramatic finale.
A total of 20 half-hour episodes have been commissioned for BBC Two and iPlayer, following the successful revival of another 1990s favourite, Gladiators.
Reactions from the Hosts
Stephen Hendry expressed his excitement, saying: "Big Break was a unique mix of trick shots and great entertainment, and I can't wait to be back at the table and bringing this incredible show to a whole new audience. Who knows, we might inspire the next generation of snooker players." Paddy McGuinness added: "I am absolutely delighted to be a part of Big Break. It is one of those shows everyone knows and loves, so to be hosting it alongside legend Stephen Hendry will be something special. Bring it on!"
The original series featured many top snooker players, including Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins, Shaun Murphy, Mark Williams, Ali Carter, and Matthew Stevens. The new series aims to capture the same magic while appealing to a contemporary audience.
