Far from the ongoing conflict and drought that afflict much of Somalia, the city of Mogadishu came alive with vibrant Eid al-Adha celebrations. Photographer Mohamed Gabobe documented the lively festivities, capturing families and friends enjoying the Islamic festival in various public spaces across the capital.
Ali Jimale Mosque: A Central Hub for Eid Prayers
Ali Jimale, the largest mosque in Somalia, has become a focal point for Eid prayers since its establishment in 2022. Tens of thousands of worshippers, including locals and members of the diaspora, gathered at the mosque for prayers. Men arrived in large numbers, waiting patiently for the start of the Eid prayers. The mosque's plaza outside was filled with friends snapping photos of each other, capturing the joyous atmosphere.
Beach and Park Gatherings
At Lido beach in Mogadishu's Abdiaziz district, families enjoyed the Eid holiday by paddling and swimming in the Indian Ocean. The beach was a popular spot for relaxation and recreation. Meanwhile, Banaadir Garden (also known as Berta Banaadir in Somali) in the city centre attracted families for picnics and outings, with rides and swings for children making it a favoured destination. Darusalaam zoo and theme park also saw large crowds during the Eid holidays, particularly among wealthier local families, staying open late to accommodate the celebrations.
Nightlife and Commerce Along Maka Al-Mukarama Road
Mogadishu’s main thoroughfare, Maka Al-Mukarama Road, remained lively until sunrise throughout the Eid celebrations. Cafes, clothing stores, and other businesses stayed busy, offering a sense of normalcy despite the challenging conditions of conflict and drought faced by much of Somalia.
