On Friday, July 4, 2026, the inaugural Roundhay Festival kicked off at Leeds' historic Roundhay Park, surprising attendees with a quietly star-studded line-up and an electric atmosphere. Spanning more than 700 acres, the park is one of the largest city parks in Europe, having hosted iconic acts like Madonna in 1987 and the Rolling Stones in 1982. Its natural open-air colosseum, with a large grassy hill on one side and a massive base at the bottom, ensures there is not a bad view in the house. Despite its ideal setting, this was the first time a festival of this scale had taken place there.
Day One: Pitbull, Lil Jon, and Tinie Tempah
Organised by AEG Presents, the same company behind BST Hyde Park and All Points East, Roundhay Festival 2026 went all out with a stellar line-up. Headliner Pitbull, Mr Worldwide himself, performed on Friday night. Supporting acts included Mexican band Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Get Low rapper Lil Jon, Pass Out legend Tinie Tempah, and Jason Derulo. The festival also featured Saturday headliner Lewis Capaldi, supported by Conan Gray, Jessie Murph, Jacob Alon, Kerr Mercer, Naive Ella, Ber, and Maya Lane. Sunday offered classical tunes by The Hallé Orchestra, hosted by Myleene Klass and conducted by Stephen Bell, with special guest Alfie Boe.
Lil Jon's unlimited energy as he switched from Sweet Caroline to Hollaback Girl, a Sweet Dreams remix, and then Lean Back made attendees feel young again. He revved up the crowd with Pump It and had them wiggling to Sugarhill Gang's Apache and Anaconda. The King of Crunk is still reigning supreme.
Tinie Tempah: A Set with Tech Hiccups
Tinie Tempah, who performed a few months ago at Koko in Camden, delivered an electric show despite initial tech issues that caused the start of his set to stutter. He addressed the crowd, keeping spirits high until the problem was resolved. Sixteen years after releasing hits including Pass Out and Written in the Stars, these certified bangers still resonate. Dressed head to toe in camo, Tinie delighted the crowd with classics like Turn the Music Louder, Miami 2 Ibiza, and Not Letting Go, along with new material. After his performance, he told the writer, "You'll have to come to more of my gigs."
Jason Derulo and Pitbull: Main Event Thrills
Jason Derulo took the stage with glamorous dancers, performing hits like Ridin' Solo, Wiggle, Whatcha Say, Swalla, Spicy Margarita, and Trumpets. However, some moments felt like overkill, with excessive lip-biting into the camera. Despite that, his vocals and dancing chops were undeniable. The final break before Pitbull saw festivalgoers refuel with options like pizza, Lebanese food, and smashed burgers.
Pitbull's performance was a bucket list experience. Donning bald caps, aviator sunglasses, and furry soul patches, fans sang along to "Meet me at the hotel room" as the sun set at 9pm. A brief Sweet Child O' Mine guitar riff transitioned into Rain Over Me with Marc Anthony. Pitbull had the crowd shaking to Suave (Kiss Me), telling them he wanted to bring the Miami club to Leeds. The park felt like it was shaking as he belted out "I wanna see you move move, shake shake, now drop, what your momma say."
Community Spirit and Festival Logistics
Throughout the concert, Pitbull preached messages of love and togetherness. When a woman collapsed after being caught in a scuffle between two men, crew members and festivalgoers joined hands to create a channel so she could be safely stretchered out of the crowd. She was conscious as she received medical care, and the unity was heartening. The journey out of the grounds was arduous, with traffic at a standstill and roads closed off, but it was hardly unexpected. This festival is a hidden gem not to be missed.
