Beloved Hollywood star Richard Kind is set for a seven-week West End run this summer, reprising his acclaimed role in the satirical comedy The Producers. The US actor and comedian will join the production at London's Garrick Theatre from March 23, taking on the role of loud-mouthed, fraudulent theatre producer Max Bialystock until May 11.
A Comic Masterpiece Returns
The 69-year-old performer previously played Max Bialystock on Broadway in 2004 and at the Hollywood Bowl in 2012, making this West End engagement his third interpretation of the iconic character. Kind replaces Olivier Award nominee Andy Nyman in the leading role temporarily, stating enthusiastically about his return to the production.
Kind's Excitement for the Role
"It's good to be back," Kind declared, elaborating on his connection to the material. "Mel Brooks is a genius. Every time I come back to The Producers, I'm reminded what a comic masterpiece it is – the jokes, the infectious energy of the story, the sheer audacity of it all – it still feels as fresh as ever."
The actor expressed particular enthusiasm about returning to the role that has become something of a signature performance for him. "I'm so thrilled to be returning to the iconic role of Max Bialystock; this is a hat-trick for me – they just can't keep me away. I'll be sure to keep Andy's fedora warm for his return, and I'm excited to dive into rehearsals."
Mel Brooks' Enthusiastic Endorsement
The Producers creator Mel Brooks shared his delight at Kind's casting, explaining the decision-making process behind bringing the actor back to the role. "When I learned we needed an actor to briefly fill Andy's nearly unfillable shoes, only one name came to mind," Brooks revealed.
The legendary comedian and filmmaker praised Kind's talents extensively. "Richard Kind is a true force of nature – he's got enough talent and energy to fill two stages. I am beyond thrilled for audiences at The Garrick to experience his Max Bialystock. London, get ready; you're in for a hilarious ride."
Production Details and History
The Producers, based on Mel Brooks' cult classic 1967 film starring Gene Wilder, follows Broadway producer Max Bialystock and accountant Leo Bloom as they scheme to get rich by producing the worst musical ever. The stage adaptation has won 12 Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards since its debut.
The West End production of The Producers, written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan with music by Brooks and directed by Patrick Marber, returned to the London stage last August and is scheduled to run until September 2026. The play originally debuted in the West End in 2004 following its Broadway success, running for three years until 2007.
Temporary Casting Arrangement
Kind's seven-week engagement allows Andy Nyman a break from The Producers to premiere The Psychic, a play he co-created with Jeremy Dyson, at York Theatre Royal this spring. This temporary casting change provides West End audiences with a unique opportunity to see an actor with deep history in the role perform it in London for the first time.
The Garrick Theatre production continues to draw audiences with its sharp satire and musical comedy, now featuring Richard Kind's interpretation of the scheming producer from March 23 through May 11, adding another chapter to the production's successful London run.
