Katie Holmes offered a generous glimpse into what her makeup routine is like on a typical morning, along with some straightforward talk to accompany it. In a video posted to her Instagram on Saturday, the 47-year-old actress demonstrated the basic steps she takes to get ready for her day.
Holmes' Makeup Philosophy
Looking fresh-faced and wearing a white terrycloth robe with her hair pulled back in a knot, Holmes was seen applying concealer and foundation, dabs of blush, lip liner, and lip gloss. 'In daily life, I do very minimal makeup because I don't feel that confident in my ability to put on makeup,' she explained. 'Also, I'm a 90s kid. That was cool back then, and I guess I still think it's the 90s.'
She added, 'My amazing makeup artist, Genevieve, is still giving me lessons on how to apply blush. And I'm 40 something years old and I'm still learning. She says, always just a little dot on the nose, kind of like salt when you're cooking. Throw it back.'
Brow Help from Co-Stars
The Secret star, whose ex Jamie Foxx is reportedly expecting a baby with his girlfriend, also acknowledged actresses Zoey Deutch and Michelle Wilson, her co-stars in the Broadway revival of Our Town, for helping her get her brows in line. 'When we were doing Our Town together, every night I would go and say, how did I do on my brows? Yeah, I usually have one good night of brows,' Holmes said.
At times, Holmes' self-deprecating humor showed through. 'I'm realizing that I'm talking to myself, which is pretty normal,' she admitted.
Life in New York
The Toledo, Ohio native described what it's been like living in her adopted hometown of New York. 'I have lived in New York on and off since 2012, and New York is just, I don't know, it's the best,' she revealed. 'I was in San Diego for three months this winter, so I missed the winter, which I wasn't upset about because the winter, it's hard in New York.'
She continued, 'I'll be back next year. I will be with everyone. I will do the snow angels, and I will go to the park, and then I will be grumpy. Like everyone. I love it.'
Style Influences
The Dawson's Creek alum, who directed and stars in the forthcoming comedy-drama Happy Hours with former co-star Joshua Jackson, compared herself to men in the morning who 'don't spend that much time getting dressed in the morning or thinking about it.' She mused, 'I tend to be, I guess, a little bit more like that, sort of always in a rush, and I've had a lot on my mind.'
She also shared how living in the big city influences her style. 'I do appreciate how different things in the city can influence so much of your style because it's like, oh, you can go see a show. And like, maybe that time period makes you think about like, oh, I want to wear a bolero because I love that show and who cares?'
She added, 'I was walking yesterday and I saw this really beautiful rosebud bush. It looked like a sherbet ice cream cone. I woke up and put a pink sweater on, probably unconsciously.'
Color and Cyclical Trends
As she applied her lip gloss, she noticed the name of the color: 'Wow, this shade is called rose, which I didn't plan. I wish I had. That would have been really smart.' Holmes recalled how she wore 'a darker lip' to her prom, then 'the nude lip' came into being, and now the darker shades are back in style. 'I feel like, wow, you're really seeing at a certain point in your life how everything is cyclical.'
'And this is actually part of this whole color story. They're all sort of the same family, which makes life very confident-making like, oh, I know I did that right,' she added, holding up the lip gloss. 'And I feel really, you know, ready,' she concluded.
Plastic Surgery Rumors
Meanwhile, Holmes hasn't been immune from whispers among fans that she may have had a little help in the plastic surgery department. After seeing her taut face in public, some fans expressed their thoughts on Reddit, with one writing, 'How does she look like she is in her 20s? What fountain of youth is she drinking from?' and another commenting, 'Is this 2006? Katie still looks like Joey Potter from Dawson's Creek. Did she get a lift?'
Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Kahn has also weighed in on the actress' wrinkle-free appearance. 'She doesn't have any wrinkles on her cheeks which could mean she is using a Microdermabrasion which erases fine lines,' he told the Daily Mail. 'It is a minimally invasive skin resurfacing treatment that gently exfoliates the skin's outermost layer.'
'Microdermabrasion takes away dead cells and creates a new surface and a more even-toned skin. It really erases years off a person's face.' Kahn also suggested that the Hollywood star could be using hyaluronic acid to help her skin 'look healthy.'
