A new comedy film titled Rolling Loud The Movie, starring Owen Wilson, Matt Rife, and Travis Scott playing a version of himself, is currently facing significant backlash. The controversy arises from the decision to cast Travis Scott, years after 10 people died in a crowd crush at his Astroworld Festival in November 2021.
Astroworld Tragedy Revisited
The 2021 Astroworld tragedy resulted in the deaths of 10 concertgoers, aged nine to 27, due to crowd crush and compressive asphyxiation. Additionally, 25 others were hospitalised and over 300 were injured. Despite widespread outrage, a Houston grand jury determined that no single individual was criminally responsible for the Astroworld deaths. All 10 wrongful death lawsuits were settled out of court.
Film Production and Criticism
With Live Nation Studios producing the film, critics are accusing it of being insensitive and "tone deaf." Some speculate it could be an attempt to distract from the past tragedy. The film, which centres around the Rolling Loud music festival, has drawn ire for casting Scott in a comedic role so soon after the disaster.
- Owen Wilson and Matt Rife co-star alongside Scott.
- The film is produced by Live Nation Studios, which also promoted the Astroworld Festival.
- Social media users have called for a boycott of the film.
As of now, no official statement has been released by the filmmakers or Travis Scott regarding the backlash.
