Kyle & Jackie O Show Officially Cancelled After Ratings Decline

The popular radio duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie 'O' Henderson have faced a significant setback this week, with their long-running show officially axed by the Australian Radio Network (ARN). This decision comes on the heels of disappointing performance in the year's first radio survey, which revealed a notable loss of listeners and poor rankings in key markets.

Survey Results Highlight Listener Drop and Market Struggles

According to the latest radio survey covering the period from January 18 to February 28, The Kyle & Jackie O Show experienced a sharp decline in its audience. In Sydney, the program lost approximately 60,000 listeners, ultimately finishing in second place with a 12.7 per cent market share, behind Ben Fordham on 2GB, who led by four percentage points. Meanwhile, in Melbourne, the show fared even worse, landing in a dismal eighth position with only a 5.1 per cent market share, despite a marginal gain of 0.1 percentage points. Their cumulative audience in Melbourne was just 403,000 listeners, highlighting their ongoing struggles in a market where they debuted nearly two years ago.

Impact of Jackie O's Departure and On-Air Conflict

The decline in ratings is widely attributed to Jackie O's abrupt departure on February 20, following a highly publicised on-air blow-up with co-host Kyle Sandilands. During the survey period, Jackie was off air for a full week, which likely contributed to the loss of listeners. This incident not only strained their professional relationship but also led to ARN terminating Jackie's $100 million contract last month, after she expressed her inability to continue working with Sandilands due to his harsh comments that left her in tears.

Competitive Landscape and Rival Success

In contrast to the struggles of The Kyle & Jackie O Show, their rivals have seen significant success. In Melbourne, Jase & Lauren on Nova 100 surged into second place with an 11.1 per cent market share, marking a 2.2 per cent increase. Meanwhile, 3AW's Russel & Ross show dominated the Melbourne market with an 18.9 per cent share. This competitive shift underscores the challenging environment that contributed to the show's cancellation.

ARN's Termination and Staff Fallout

The official end of The Kyle & Jackie O Show was announced on Wednesday, with Kyle Sandilands releasing a statement at 7am confirming that ARN had terminated his 10-year, $100 million contract. Shortly after, ARN CEO Michael Stephenson sent an email to staff, stating that the show would no longer be presented. This news sent shockwaves through KIIS FM, with many staff members, some of whom are employed through Sandilands' company King Kyle rather than directly by ARN, expressing anger and concern over their futures. An insider revealed that staff were often informed via social media rather than official channels, leading to frustration about the handling of the situation.

Contractual Breaches and Suspension

ARN provided written notice to Kyle Sandilands, citing his behaviour during the February 20 show as an act of serious misconduct that breached the service agreement with Quasar Media. As a result, he was given a 14-day suspension to remedy the breach. Despite efforts to address the issues, the network ultimately decided to cancel the show, declining to comment further when approached by Daily Mail. This move marks a dramatic end to a decade-long partnership that once dominated Australian radio.
