Sir Terry Wogan Named Britain's Favourite Radio Presenter of All Time
In a landmark survey, the late broadcasting legend Sir Terry Wogan has been crowned as Britain's favourite radio presenter of all time. A third of British listeners believe that Sir Terry, who passed away in 2016, remains unparalleled on the airwaves, with his voice continuing to resonate deeply in the nation's heart.
Top Presenters and Iconic Radio Moments
Following Sir Terry Wogan in the rankings is Chris Evans, who began his career at Manchester's Piccadilly Radio in 1983 and rose to host Radio 1's flagship breakfast show just twelve years later. The list of favourites continues with John Peel, Chris Moyles, Sara Cox, and Zoe Ball, showcasing a diverse range of beloved broadcasters.
Despite the growing popularity of streaming services, podcasts, and social media, the survey found that 38% of Britons still prefer listening to the radio over watching television. Nearly half appreciate radio for stimulating the imagination, while a quarter value its ability to foster a more human connection.
The study also uncovered the top radio moments according to listeners. These include Lauren Laverne's gentle announcement of David Bowie's death on BBC 6 Music, Sir Terry Wogan's final sign-off from Radio 2, and dramatic plot twists in The Archers. Other notable moments highlighted are Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Kitchen Disco" era and Zoe Ball's debut as the first female host of the Radio 2 breakfast show.
Memorable Events and National Grant Initiative
Britons also recall hearing significant events on the radio, such as the England Lionesses winning the Euros in 2022, the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and the Brexit referendum night and its aftermath on Radio 4 in 2016. These moments underscore radio's role in capturing historical and cultural milestones.
In response to the findings, audio firm PURE has launched a unique grant to support student radio stations, aiming to secure the future of this cherished form of entertainment. The grant addresses rising running costs, as financial pressures threaten to stifle emerging broadcasting talent.
Richie Anderson, a BBC Radio 2 presenter, emphasized the importance of student radio, stating, "I owe so much to my time in student radio; it's genuinely where everything started for me. I learned how to tell stories, connect with listeners, and be myself behind the mic."
Hubert Eiter of PURE, which commissioned the study for its 25th anniversary, commented, "Radio still holds a special place in the nation's hearts, even in a world dominated by streaming. Student radio is often the first step into broadcasting, yet rising costs are putting that opportunity at risk. This grant aims to keep those doors open for young talent to thrive."
