Royal Family Dynamics: Ex-Wife and New Fiancée Set for Social Overlap
When Peter Phillips and his bride-to-be, Harriet Spearling, attended the Cheltenham Festival last month, they found themselves in an immediately awkward situation. Mere moments after their arrival, Peter's former wife, Autumn Phillips, appeared at the racing event arm-in-arm with her property tycoon boyfriend, Donal Mulryan. For most people, encountering a partner's ex at social gatherings is something to avoid at all costs. However, for Princess Anne's soon-to-be daughter-in-law, this will become a regular occurrence within royal circles.
Enduring Family Connections
Despite finalizing their divorce in 2019, Autumn Phillips has maintained close ties with the royal family. Following the separation, she continued residing at Princess Anne's Gatcombe Estate for a considerable period, prioritizing the wellbeing of their two daughters, Savannah, now 15, and Isla, 14. This arrangement ensured stability for the children during the transition. Now, this existing family unit of four will expand to include two new members: Harriet Spearling, 45, and her daughter, Georgia, born in 2012.
The wedding plans were officially confirmed yesterday. Peter Phillips and his NHS nurse fiancée, after two years together, will marry in a private ceremony at All Saints Church in Kemble, Cirencester, on June 6. Both King Charles and Queen Camilla, along with the Prince and Princess of Wales, have been informed of the upcoming nuptials. Beyond co-parenting their teenage daughters, devout Christian Harriet and Autumn will inevitably move within overlapping social spheres, attending many of the same high-profile events.
Demonstrated Family Bonds
The enduring connection between Autumn and the royals was visibly demonstrated last April at the Cirencester Horse Trials. Autumn and Princess Anne were photographed engaged in close conversation, showing mutual support for royal equestrian Zara Tindall. Royal photographer James Whatling described the scene to Hello magazine as "nice and relaxed," noting that Autumn "is obviously still part of the family" and was chatting comfortably with Anne and others. He emphasized that she "hasn't been ostracised in any way" and formed part of a "support team" for Zara.
Since her divorce from Peter, Autumn has found romance with Monaco-based property investor Donal Mulryan. Their relationship became public knowledge just weeks after her divorce was finalized in June 2021. Interestingly, when their romance first emerged, the pair made "no secret of their relationship" despite Donal reportedly still being married to his socialite wife, Louise Mulryan, at the time. His current marital status remains unclear. Donal, with 25 years in the property industry, co-founded West Properties in 2002 and established real estate investment firm Rockwell in 2015.
From Grand Prix to Royal Chapel
Autumn, originally from Montreal, was working as a management consultant when she met Peter Phillips at the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix. He was then employed by the Williams Formula 1 team. Remarkably, she reportedly did not discover he was the Queen's grandson until six weeks later, upon seeing him on television. She subsequently moved to Britain, and the couple married in 2008 at St George's Chapel, Windsor. Their wedding sparked controversy after they sold the exclusive photographic rights to Hello! magazine for an estimated £500,000.
The couple initially lived on Princess Anne's Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire with their daughters. Savannah holds the distinction of being the late Queen Elizabeth II's first great-grandchild. However, by 2019, they had begun living separately. Peter stated that the separation was "the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship." A spokesperson confirmed at the time that the financial aspects of their divorce had been resolved amicably through the High Court, with both parents prioritizing their daughters' wellbeing.
A New Chapter with Harriet Spearling
The marriage breakdown was considered particularly painful for the late Queen, who shared a close bond with Autumn. Peter and Harriet, who began dating in May 2024, announced their engagement in July. Peter, who is 19th in the line of succession, proposed with a ring featuring a subtle tribute to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, designed by the same jeweller responsible for her 1946 ring.
Royal biographer Richard Fitzwilliams suggests this wedding will differ significantly from Peter's first marriage to Autumn Kelly, which left the Royal Family "bewildered." Harriet is known for her strong Christian faith, which she has credited as a source of strength during challenging periods of single parenthood. In a 2009 interview, she described how the end of a seven-year relationship led her to reconnect with her faith, feeling "something was missing." She later wrote for Christian magazine Woman Alive about finding comfort through her beliefs during difficult times.
According to her online biography, Harriet resides in Gloucestershire and works as a paediatric nurse specialist for the NHS. She is described as "passionate about early brain development in babies and seeing children thrive." In 2010, she played a crucial role in a medical team that saved the life of a critically ill baby named Phineas, who contracted a deadly virus at just three weeks old. Over the past two years, Harriet has been warmly received by the Royal Family, notably seen sharing laughter with King Charles at Ascot after participating in the official carriage procession with senior royals.
