Cillian Murphy Denies Voldemort Role in Harry Potter Series

Cillian Murphy Gives Definitive Response to Voldemort Casting Rumours

Cillian Murphy has definitively shut down widespread speculation that he has been cast as the dark wizard Voldemort in the forthcoming Harry Potter television series. The Irish actor, who is forty-nine years old, had been at the centre of intense casting rumours for the iconic villainous role. These rumours gained significant traction after Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort in the original Harry Potter film adaptations, appeared to suggest that Murphy's involvement was already confirmed.

Ralph Fiennes' Viral Comments Spark Speculation

In a viral TikTok clip shared by the film discussion channel Let's Talk Film back in January, Fiennes was recorded saying, "I'm told [my shoes] are already filled, aren't they? I think Cillian Murphy is very good. A very good choice." This statement was widely interpreted as an indication that Murphy had been selected to succeed Fiennes in the role for the new television adaptation. The clip circulated rapidly across social media platforms, fuelling fan theories and media reports about the potential casting.

Murphy's Categorical Denial in New Interview

However, in a new and comprehensive interview with The Times newspaper, Murphy has now firmly denied any involvement with the Harry Potter project. When directly questioned about the rumours, he stated unequivocally, "I'm categorically not [playing Voldemort]. Can you make that the headline?" This clear and definitive statement aims to put an end to the persistent speculation surrounding his potential casting in the highly anticipated series.

Cast Announcements and Controversial Backdrop

The Harry Potter television series, which is expected to premiere next year, has already announced a number of cast members. Newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton have been cast to play the central trio of children. The adult cast includes established actors such as Janet McTeer, John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Paul Whitehouse, Johnny Flynn, Warwick Davis, and Paapa Essiedu.

However, the involvement of these adult actors has attracted some criticism and controversy. This stems from a planned boycott by certain viewers who are protesting the stance of Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling on transgender rights. Rowling, who serves as an executive producer on the television show, has become one of the United Kingdom's most prominent voices against transgender rights in recent years. She has donated significant sums of money to organisations that seek to reduce legal protections for transgender individuals, a position that has sparked widespread debate and calls for boycotts of her work.

Murphy Reflects on Peaky Blinders Legacy

Elsewhere in his interview with The Times, Cillian Murphy discussed the forthcoming Peaky Blinders film, titled Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which sees him return to the role of Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby. Reflecting on his long association with the character, Murphy noted, "I was thirty-five when we started filming the Peaky Blinders television series and forty-eight when we made the film. I've played Tommy for over a quarter of my life, moving from being a youngish man right into the teeth of middle age. It's incredibly rewarding seeing everybody around you get older."

Murphy also attributed the enduring success of the Peaky Blinders franchise to the novel-like quality of television as a storytelling medium. He explained, "It wasn't an instant hit. People thought that it was okay, but its second series was when it really clicked, and people are still discovering it. A film will come and be hot or not, and then it's gone. But television? It's like a novel – people find it." The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas from the sixth of March before arriving on the Netflix streaming platform on the twentieth of March.
