Coronation Street Kills Off Jim McDonald After 37 Years

Coronation Street is set to kill off iconic character Jim McDonald, played by Charles Lawson, in a sad twist. The character, who debuted in 1989, will be confirmed dead offscreen, with his final scenes not aired.

Next month, Jim's son Steve McDonald will be informed of his father's death, leaving him conflicted. Jim last appeared on the show in 2018 and has had no contact with Steve since. The character was central to major storylines, including murdering Jez Quigley in a revenge attack and time in prison.

Radio Times broke the news, with a source saying the death will 'rock the boat' for Steve, who has just found happiness with Cassie Plummer. Liz actress Beverley Callard will not return for the storyline. Charles Lawson is aware of his character's fate.

Fans have reacted on social media, with one writing: 'JIM MCDONALD IS BEING KILLED OFF?' Another said: 'What on earth. Killing off Les for no reason was bad enough, but Jim is one who’s spanned 30 years and there is still life in the character.'

The news comes after Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie, quit the show after three years to join the UK tour of Annie as Miss Hannigan. A Corrie spokesperson confirmed Cassie will leave in the summer with a 'great exit storyline'.
