The final episode of The Boys has arrived, and viewers are eager to learn the fates of their beloved characters. Among them, Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) has been notably absent for two seasons, leaving fans curious about her ultimate destiny.
Did Queen Maeve Appear in the Finale?
Unfortunately, Queen Maeve did not make a cameo in the series finale, titled Blood and Bone. The Wonder Woman-esque heroine with super-strength has remained retired and off-grid since her last appearance at the end of season three. Despite many hoping for a surprise return, she stayed away from the climactic showdown where Homelander (Antony Starr) finally faced his reckoning at the hands of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban).
Maeve's Last Stand in Season Three
In the third season finale, Maeve chose to sacrifice her powers to help defeat Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). She then faked her death to settle down with her girlfriend Elena (Nicola Correia-Damude), escaping the public eye. However, her final battle was not without cost: she lost an eye during a brutal fight with Homelander.
Why Wasn't She in the Finale?
Showrunner Eric Kripke explained that he would have loved to include McElligott, but the Irish actress is mostly retired from acting. Her last credit was voicing Maeve in the 2022 animated spin-off The Boys Presents: Diabolical. Kripke told Gold Derby: "Her schedule didn't work out. It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing. I was like, 'If we wrote it, would you do it?' And she's like, 'I'm kind of out of it, and I'm busy, and unfortunately I can't, but send everyone my love.' That was sort of it."
Maeve's Legacy Acknowledged
Although Maeve did not appear, her impact was felt. In the finale, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) spoke to Gen V's Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) about Maeve, saying: "Never meet your heroes. She was bitter, she was checked out. She gave away so many parts of herself, there was nothing left. I swore to myself I would never let that happen to me, but it did." This poignant moment honored Maeve's character arc and the lessons she imparted.
The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
