Sarah Jessica Parker's Rare Fashion Misstep in NYC Sweatpants
SJP's Rare Fashion Misstep in Sweatpants

Sarah Jessica Parker's bold fashion choices – and those of her Sex and the City alter ego Carrie Bradshaw – have made her a global fashion icon. But the casual outfit she wore while out and about in New York City on Tuesday proved that even a devoted fashionista can have an off-day.

The actress, 61, looked decidedly dour in baggy blue sweatpants, a gray T-shirt, and an oversized gray cardigan, along with Ugg slip-ons. Parker was also curiously weighed down by three large tote bags filled to the brim. The star, who earlier this week celebrated her 29th anniversary with husband Matthew Broderick, seemed focused on the task at hand.

Fans of Sex and the City would have been shocked at the sloppy get-up, and Carrie, too, no doubt. Parker and her costume designers Patricia Field, Molly Rogers, and Danny Santiago dressed Carrie in a unique sense of style that became her signature, from pastel tutus and ab-baring crop tops to floral chokers and Manolo Blahnik shoes.

The two-time Emmy winner told the December 2021 issue of Vogue that she kept every stitch of clothing and accessory from Carrie's closet. 'I had all of the original stuff in my own storage. Furniture, clothes, everything, packed according to season and episode and scene. I kept every single solitary thing,' she said.

In August of last year, she told People she often wears Carrie's old outfits to parties and other events when the occasion warrants it. 'I just did it,' she said at the time. 'I was invited to a birthday party in England, and we were already nearby, so I pulled from the archive. It's one of the few occasions I've ever pulled from the archive for personal use. It's not every day.'

Parker said she is 'very thoughtful' when it comes to raiding Carrie's closet and will ask herself questions like: 'What would the circumstances and the environment be that I would be wearing this, and would it be okay and safe, or would it be destroyed? I'm very judicious about that,' she added.

Sex and the City, which also starred Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York), was a massive hit for HBO and a cultural phenomenon when it aired from June 1998 to February 2004. The series launched two movies, 2008's Sex and the City and a sequel in 2010, and there was a CW series, The Carrie Diaries, from 2013 to 2014, which followed a teenage Carrie in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, And Just Like That, which wasn't as popular as the original series, concluded its third and final season in August 2025. 'Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,' Parker said in a statement after it was announced there wouldn't be a fourth season. 'I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned, and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion.'
