ITV has quietly released the fourth season of the award-winning drama The Affair, which fans have hailed as the 'best TV show ever.' The series is now available to stream on ITVX from Sunday, July 5, following the broadcaster's release of seasons one to three earlier in March 2026.
Award-Winning Drama Returns
Featuring Ruth Wilson, Dominic West, Maura Tierney, and Joshua Jackson, The Affair originally premiered in the United States in 2014 on Showtime and concluded in 2019. The series comprises a total of 53 episodes.
Critical and Fan Acclaim
The critically celebrated drama explores the emotional and psychological aftermath of an affair that tore apart two marriages, and the crime that ultimately draws the characters back together. One fan praised the show as 'the best TV show ever,' stating: 'They don't make TV shows like this. This is drama at its best. Superb writing and cast of actors, so much talent in this one show. I wished there were 10 seasons of this because it never gets old.'
The fan added: 'Probably season 4 is my favourite because we have travelled so far with these characters that they feel like friends now. The script is beautifully written, all full of nuances and subtle details that make you pay attention, no words are wasted.'
Season Four Plot
Season four finds Noah (Dominic West), Helen (Maura Tierney), Alison (Ruth Wilson), and Cole (Joshua Jackson) each going their separate ways, estranged from one another and drifting further from where their shared story began. Every character embarks on a new relationship, compelling them to confront whether they are truly ready to leave the past behind. The season explores fresh starts, devastating conclusions, and the elusive prospect of forgiveness.
