Death in Paradise's Ralf Little on New 'Gritty' Stage Role in The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
Ralf Little on 'Gritty' Stage Role After Death in Paradise Exit

Ralf Little, best known for playing DI Neville Parker in the BBC crime drama Death in Paradise, has opened up about his latest project: a stage adaptation of John le Carré's novel The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. The actor left the show in 2024 after four years, with Don Gilet taking over as DI Mervin Wilson.

From TV to Stage: A Grittier Role

Little appeared on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch to discuss his portrayal of British intelligence officer Alec Leamas. He told presenters Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer: 'There are no gadgets, no glamour. Le Carré's work, you can kind of feel his disdain for the entire spy game.'

Set in 1961, the play follows Leamas, head of the Berlin station, as he watches his agents—his only friends—be captured and killed one by one. Little explained: 'He basically watches all his friends disappear and get killed. He comes back to London, emotionally exhausted, disillusioned, just ready to give it all up and is persuaded by the powers that be to go on one last mission.'

A Long-Awaited Change

The actor admitted he had long wanted to take on a darker role. 'I've been known over the years for playing affable, likeable characters. I understand why, and I'm delighted that I've been able to do that, but I've wanted to do something a bit grittier and grimier for a long time, and this has been my chance. Someone has taken a swing on me to do it,' he said.

Little praised the play's twists and turns, leaving audiences questioning who to trust. Sunday Brunch airs on Channel 4 every Sunday from 10am.
