Duvets and pillows can be thoroughly refreshed without a washing machine using a simple sunlight method, according to bedding expert Steven Szary of My Luxury Sleep Shop. The technique harnesses the sun's natural disinfecting properties to eliminate bacteria, dust mites, and stale odours.
Why Sunlight Works for Bedding
Steven Szary explained: "Leave your duvet out for several hours (four to five is about right) and it's best to do it in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun isn't too harsh. A little bit of sun is good, though, as it helps to kill unwanted bacteria and germs." Sunlight's ultraviolet rays act as a natural disinfectant, breaking down microbes and allergens trapped in the fabric.
Over time, duvets and pillows accumulate sweat, body oils, and dust. Regular airing prevents mould growth and restores the filling's loft, improving sleep quality. The method is especially timely during spring cleaning season, when many households seek effective yet gentle cleaning alternatives.
Step-by-Step Guide to Sun-Cleaning Your Bedding
Timing and weather conditions are critical. Szary advised choosing a sunny, breezy day following a period of dry weather. "If it's cloudy or has rained recently, the air will be more humid and will not be as effective for airing out your bedding," he noted.
- Shake and beat: Before hanging, give the duvet and pillows a vigorous shake to loosen fibres and prevent clumping. Lightly beat the duvet to redistribute the filling.
- Hang properly: Ideally, hang the duvet on a washing line. Alternatively, drape it over a drying rack, fence, or any clean, secure surface. Place pillows on an outdoor airer or a clean flat surface.
- Expose for 4-5 hours: Leave the bedding outside during late afternoon when the sun is gentler. This protects the fabric from stiffness while still providing enough UV exposure to sanitise.
Benefits Beyond Cleanliness
This method not only refreshes bedding but also extends its lifespan by avoiding the wear and tear of machine washing. The gentle warmth and airflow eliminate stale smells and rejuvenate natural fillings like down or synthetic alternatives. After the treatment, the bedding is ready for a more restful night's sleep.
Szary emphasised that this solar refresh is suitable for all duvet and pillow types, though delicate fabrics may require shorter exposure. For heavily soiled items, spot cleaning may be needed beforehand. The technique aligns with eco-friendly cleaning practices, reducing water and energy use.
