Epsom Salt: A Natural Remedy for Summer Lawn Care
Eleni Veroutsos from Backyard Boss has revealed that Epsom salt, a common bathroom product, can revive struggling lawns during hot weather. Unlike table salt, Epsom salt is a naturally occurring mineral rich in magnesium, which boosts chlorophyll production for deeper green grass.
Why Epsom Salt Works on Lawns
Magnesium in Epsom salt encourages plants to produce more chlorophyll, resulting in a richer green colour. It also supports photosynthesis, allowing grass to absorb more sunlight and withstand heat. Increased chlorophyll activity helps lawns hold onto moisture, preventing brown patches.
How to Apply Epsom Salt to Your Lawn
Mix one tablespoon of Epsom salt per litre of water until fully dissolved. Apply using a sprayer, spreader, or watering can. The best time is morning or early evening; afternoon heat can scorch grass. Use Epsom salt as a supplement, not a fertiliser substitute, and apply only once every six weeks, typically once per season.
