Newcastle Racecourse Implements Special Measures for Horses on Hottest Plate Day
Newcastle Racecourse Keeps Horses Cool on Hottest Plate Day

Newcastle Racecourse has announced special measures to ensure the safety and comfort of horses competing in the Northumberland Plate Festival, as temperatures are forecast to reach nearly 30°C on Plate Day, Saturday, June 27, 2026. The measures include large fans, ice water, extra water troughs, and additional staff to regularly water down the horses.

Plate Day Weather and Festival Schedule

The Northumberland Plate Festival, one of Newcastle's most anticipated social events, began on Thursday with Seaton Delaval Trophy Day, followed by Gosforth Park Cup Night on Friday. The main event, Plate Day, is expected to draw a large crowd to the Gosforth racecourse. While the festival has historically experienced mixed weather, this year's forecast predicts sweltering heat, with temperatures around 26°C on Saturday, slightly cooler than Friday's expected highs.

Measures to Protect Horses and Jockeys

The racecourse's priority is keeping the equine athletes cool. In addition to fans and ice water, extra water troughs will be placed on site, and staff will regularly hose down the horses. For jockeys, handheld fans and ice lolly treats will be provided to help beat the heat. Racegoers are encouraged to stay hydrated with free drinking water available at all bars, and complimentary suncream will be provided. Handheld fans will also be available for marquee hospitality guests.

According to Simon Duke, What's On Editor at ChronicleLive, the measures are part of the racecourse's commitment to animal welfare during extreme weather conditions. The festival continues to be a highlight of Newcastle's social calendar, with thousands expected to attend despite the heat.
