A yellow heat-health alert has been issued for Merseyside and parts of the North West, effective from 9am on Wednesday, July 8, until 9pm on Sunday, July 12. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warning comes as temperatures are forecast to climb into the high 20s and reach 30C by Friday.
Areas Affected and Alert Levels
The yellow alert covers the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the North West. An amber alert is in place for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East, and South West. The high temperatures could pose significant risks to individuals over 65 and may lead to an increase in water-related incidents.
Temperature Forecast
The Met Office forecasts a high of 29C on Wednesday, with a bright and sunny day after morning low cloud clears. Thursday is expected to reach 25C, while Friday could see a scorching 30C. The humid conditions will persist into the weekend, with 29C forecast for Saturday and 27C on Sunday.
According to the Met Office: "A bright start for most, with any morning low cloud quickly lifting and clearing away. Then a much sunnier day than of late for all, with generally light winds. Feeling warmer as a result. Maximum temperature 29 °C."
Health Advice
The UKHSA advises vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, to take precautions during the hot weather. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding excessive sun exposure during peak hours, and checking on vulnerable neighbours.
