Actor Johnny Lewis killed woman, cat, then died in fall

The shocking final chapter in the life of actor Johnny Lewis unfolded at a Los Angeles bed and breakfast, a place he had sought out in a bid to rebuild his life. Instead, on 26 September 2012, it became the scene of a harrowing tragedy that claimed three lives: his own, that of his 81-year-old landlady, and her pet cat.

A Rapid Descent from Fame

Just years before, Johnny Lewis was a rising star. Having appeared in the popular teen drama The O.C. and the gritty FX series Sons of Anarchy, he was even romantically linked to global pop sensation Katy Perry in 2005. However, his life began to unravel dramatically around 2010. This period saw the end of his relationship with actress Diane Gaeta, the birth of their daughter, and a serious motorbike accident in October 2011 that caused significant head injuries.

Despite his father's efforts to encourage psychiatric treatment and doctors recommending an MRI scan, Lewis refused all medical help. His behaviour grew increasingly erratic and violent. In January 2012, he was charged with assault after hitting two men with a bottle. Weeks later, he faced accusations of attempting to break into a woman's home.

Warnings Ignored and a Fatal Release

Probation officials explicitly warned that Lewis, struggling with suspected mental health and drug issues, would "continue to be a threat to any community he may reside in". After a failed attempt by his family to secure rehab, Lewis was released from jail on 21 September 2012, where his health had deteriorated further during an extended stay.

He returned to the Writers' Villa in Los Feliz, a boarding house for aspiring actors, where he had stayed before. He was reportedly reeling from a "long and painful" custody battle. His peaceful recovery plan lasted only five days.

A Day of Violence and Tragedy

On the morning of 26 September, police were called after Lewis allegedly jumped a fence into a neighbouring property, attacking a painter and the homeowner, introducing himself bizarrely as "John, your new neighbour". When officers proceeded to the Villa, they made a grim discovery.

Inside, they found the body of his landlady, Catherine Davis, 81, a woman known locally as the 'Hollywood Hills Philanthropist'. She had been strangled and suffered severe head injuries. Her cat was also found dead. Lewis's body was discovered on the driveway below; he had fallen from the roof, garage, or patio area.

The autopsy report, released in November 2012, delivered a startling finding: Lewis had no drugs or alcohol in his system. Toxicology tests showed no trace of marijuana, cocaine, psychedelics, or anti-psychotic medication. The Los Angeles County Coroner ultimately ruled his death an accident, stating there was no definitive evidence he intended to kill himself or that he was pushed.

Aftermath and Analysis

In the wake of the tragedy, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter remembered Lewis as "an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way", expressing sorrow that an innocent life was caught in his "destructive path". Former co-star Nikki Reed spoke of her shock, recalling him as "the nicest guy".

Criminal psychologist Lydia Benecke later suggested Lewis could have suffered from an organic personality disorder, potentially exacerbated by the head injury from his 2011 motorcycle accident. The case remains a stark and tragic example of a mental health crisis left untreated, culminating in an unimaginable and fatal outburst of violence.
