Coronation Street Legend Beverley Callard Reveals Heightened Red Carpet Anxiety Amid Cancer Battle

Coronation Street icon Beverley Callard has made a heartfelt admission about her ongoing struggle with breast cancer, confessing that her fear of red carpet events has intensified since her diagnosis. The 68-year-old actress, renowned for her role as Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald on the ITV soap for three decades, disclosed last month that she is in the early stages of breast cancer and is recovering from initial surgery.

Emotional Social Media Update Details Personal Struggles

In a candid social media post on Tuesday evening, Beverley explained she has been attempting to conceal signs of her illness as she prepares to return to work for a promotional event. After taking a brief hiatus from social media to spend quiet time with her husband Jon McEwan, whom she married in 2010, the actress shared an emotional update with her followers.

"Hi. An update. I've not posted for the last couple of days because to be honest, I'm just really tired, I'm rubbish at the moment," Beverley wrote. "But also, a lot of your messages have been so great and lots of them said 'Just take a bit of time for you!' So I've done that and it was good for Jon and I just to have some quiet time because, obviously, it gets to him, just as much as me."

Red Carpet Appearances Become Increasingly Daunting

The actress revealed she faces a particularly challenging situation: attending a red carpet event to promote a project she filmed last year. Beverley admitted this prospect has become even more nerve-wracking since her cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery.

"I have to, hopefully, go back to work on Sunday and Monday, just for two days but it's to do promotion for a job that I filmed last year," she explained. "It's a bit of a red carpet do and anybody who knows me knows I hate those things."

Beverley, who recently signed up to appear in the Irish soap Fair City before receiving her diagnosis, emphasized that while she loves acting and creating characters, the publicity aspect has always been difficult for her.

Physical Changes and Emotional Vulnerability

The star detailed how her physical condition has affected her confidence, revealing she needed to have a dress altered to help disguise her current situation.

"I love my job, I love learning lines, I love creating a character but standing posing on a red carpet is my worst nightmare," Beverley confessed. "But now [it's] even worse because I feel lopsided. I've just had to have a lady come to alter a dress that I'm thinking about wearing, and try and disguise what I'm going through at the moment so I'm even more nervous about it."

She added her characteristic humor despite the difficult circumstances: "I know loads of people will think 'Ooh, red carpet, and getting all dressed up...' I prefer being dressed like this, but there you go! I'm nervous and anxious about that, and I'm trying to prepare."

Ongoing Medical Journey and Emotional Toll

Beverley also shared that she faces further medical uncertainty, with a hospital appointment scheduled to determine whether she requires a second procedure. Her update comes just days after she tearfully revealed to followers that she was struggling in the aftermath of her surgery.

In that previous emotional disclosure, the Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star described her difficult recovery: "Full disclosure, it's a week today since my operation and I woke up this morning and I put yesterday's clothes on – which were dropped on the floor last night when I went to bed. I've not cleaned my teeth, I've not combed my hair. I can't answer my phone because if somebody says a kind word to me, I just cry."

She expressed solidarity with others who might be experiencing similar struggles: "And I'm so absolutely, absolutely rubbish today and I've been like that all day. I'm really tired, I keep feeling a bit queasy but I've no idea why. And I just thought, 'oh well I'm not going to post anything today because I don't want to make people feel miserable' – but maybe you are feeling the same."
