Laura Storr, a 35-year-old British woman, is critically ill in Saudi Arabia and urgently needs a lung transplant, but she does not qualify for the life-saving surgery in the Middle Eastern country. Her sister, Emily, has launched a desperate plea to raise £110,000 for a medical evacuation flight to bring Laura back to the United Kingdom, where she has been approved for treatment on the National Health Service.
Desperate Situation in Saudi Arabia
Laura has been hospitalised in Saudi Arabia for the past two months, and her condition continues to deteriorate rapidly. She suffers from pulmonary arterial hypertension, a progressive and often fatal lung condition that causes high blood pressure in the arteries. This rare form of the disease aggressively attacks her lungs and heart, and there is currently no effective medication available for it.
Emily explained that Laura is now in a severe and critical state, unable to travel on a commercial flight due to dangerously low oxygen levels. She requires a specialist medical team to accompany her on a medivac flight, with a UK hospital team ready to provide immediate intensive care upon her arrival.
Financial and Logistical Challenges
The cost of the medical evacuation has soared to £110,000, significantly higher than usual due to the ongoing conflict in the region. This situation has made travel more complex and urgent, necessitating additional resources, planning, and specialist support to ensure Laura can be transported safely.
While Laura has medical insurance through her work, which covers her current medical costs in Saudi Arabia, it does not extend to the evacuation expenses. Emily has set up a GoFundMe page in a bid to raise the necessary funds, expressing her devastation and worry over her sister's plight.
Family Struggles and Regional Tensions
Emily added that their parents have been in Saudi Arabia caring for Laura around the clock, but with escalating regional conflicts, their safety is also a constant concern. Laura, who moved from Essex to Saudi Arabia in 2020 to manage a fitness studio, has recently picked up an infection that makes her lungs feel bruised and causes her to cough up blood, further complicating her condition.
Her consultant has emphasised the urgency, stating that she needs to return to the UK before it is too late. This plea comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Iran threatening to attack energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar in retaliation for Israeli strikes, adding another layer of risk to the situation.
Emily described the emotional toll, saying she wakes up every day on edge, watching her sister struggle from afar. The family is now racing against time to secure the funds and arrange the evacuation, hoping to bring Laura home for the life-saving transplant she desperately needs.
