Damp Homes Could Endanger Millions with Lung Conditions This Winter

Asthma + Lung UK has issued a stark warning that millions of individuals suffering from lung conditions are facing significantly heightened health risks this winter. This alarming situation is primarily driven by the combination of persistent wet weather and escalating energy bills across the United Kingdom.

Rising Threats from Damp and Mould Exposure

Exposure to damp and mould in homes, which is exacerbated by these environmental and economic factors, can trigger fatal asthma attacks, increase the incidence of severe chest infections, and lead to a surge in hospital admissions. The charity emphasises that these conditions create a perfect storm for vulnerable populations, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory issues.

Survey Highlights Heating Struggles

A recent survey conducted by Asthma + Lung UK revealed that nearly one-fifth of people with lung conditions were already struggling to adequately heat their homes, even before the recent spikes in oil prices. This financial strain forces many to live in colder, damper environments, further compromising their health.

Record Wet Winter Aggravates Indoor Mould

The Met Office has reported that the UK experienced one of the wettest winters on record, creating ideal breeding grounds for indoor mould. According to the charity, this mould triggers symptoms for approximately one-third of patients affected by lung conditions, making it a critical public health concern.

Recommended Preventive Measures

To mitigate these risks, Asthma + Lung UK recommends several practical measures for households:

  • Regularly opening windows to improve ventilation
  • Avoiding drying clothes indoors to reduce moisture levels
  • Maintaining home temperatures above 18 degrees Celsius
These steps can help reduce dampness and mould growth, thereby lowering health risks.

Call for Government Action

In addition to individual actions, the charity is urgently calling on the government to implement its £15 billion Warm Homes plan. This initiative aims to improve home insulation and energy efficiency, ensuring that vulnerable individuals can afford to keep their homes warm and dry during the winter months.

The combination of a record wet winter and rising energy costs has created a hazardous environment for millions with lung conditions, necessitating both personal vigilance and robust policy responses to prevent serious health outcomes.
